Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG)

Definition

Profit from sale of capital assets held for more than 12 months (equities/equity MFs) or 24 months (property/unlisted shares).

In Context

LTCG on listed equity/equity mutual funds: 12.5% flat (no indexation; ₹1.25L annual exemption). LTCG on property/gold/other non-equity assets: 20% with indexation benefit (or 12.5% without indexation, whichever is lower tax).
